The Building Department is charged with ensuring that new buildings and structures
are built consistent with state and federal building codes. The Department’s primary functions are outlined below:
Provide building code information to residents and property owners.
Accept permit applications, fees and track applications through the review
and inspection process.
Review permit applications for compliance with building codes.
Inspect building projects for compliance with approved plans and building
code.
Work with property owners to resolve building code violations.
Departmental Goals for 2003
1. Continue to improve communication with citizens about building services
and codes. Make review and inspection processes fair, streamlined
and citizen-friendly.
2. Continue to work with other departments to ensure compliance with all
City codes and standards.
Budget
The majority of funding
for this department comes from application and inspection fees. The
balance is made up by a small transfer from the General Fund. This
transfer represents about 20% of the Building Dept. budget. State
law requires that building permit revenues be dedicated to building inspection
programs. Revenue must not subsidize other City activities.
