Old Safeway Building Comes Down to Make Way for North Main Project

The long-awaited wrecking ball will take to the Old Safeway site during the week of May 5th. After the rubble is cleared away, a new mixed-use development will be constructed in its place, a project that has been pointed to by City staff and officials as being one of the keys to redeveloping and reviving Milwaukie’s Downtown.

In early April Council followed the citizen-based selection committee’s recommendation of naming Peak Development as the firm to lead the project, and design and financing are now in the process of being finalized. The City’s Project Manager, Jeff King, emphasizes that Open Houses and Neighborhood Association meeting presentations will be part of this finalizing process.

The project currently calls for a 4-story building, with about 19,600 square feet of space - retail uses on the bottom floor, and one and two bedroom apartments and condos on the upper floors. The current proposal calls for 42 apartments and 14 condos.
