City Working to Quiet Train Horns![]()
The City of Milwaukie may undertake an effort that would silence train horns at several crossings of the Union Pacific railroad - but doing so is costly and City Council wants to make sure it has the support of its residents before moving forward.
Under newly revised federal regulations the City can establish a Train Horn Quiet Zone, in which additional safety measures constructed at the crossings eliminate the need for trains to sound their horns. The program would both increase safety at railroad crossings and reduce train noise throughout the City. The three intersections under study are at Harrison Street, Oak Street and 37th Avenue.
City Council has expressed an interest in the issue, citing safety and quality of life concerns, but wants to be certain Milwaukie residents support this effort.
City staff is compiling a list of residents interested in a Quiet Zone, and would like to hear from you. Interested persons should contact the City’s transportation liaison, Gavin Hales, at (503) 786-7643 or by e-mail at halesg@ci.milwaukie.or.us.
