It's easier to bike in Milwaukie than you might think. On average a two-mile trip by bicycle takes just 10 minutes. In Milwaukie, that's the distance from downtown Milwaukie to:

-60th and Monroe;
-36th and Johnson Creek Blvd; or
-the intersection of Lake Road and Highway 224; just to name a few.

Plan Your Route
Thanks to Smart Trips SE, the City now has a bike map. Use it to plan your route ahead of time, or carry a copy with you when you ride.

Bike Parking
The city recently installed a number of new bike racks in the downtown area. Use our downtown bike parking map to find the closest rack to your destination.

Bike Laws

The State of Oregon Bicycle and Pedestrian Program provides a summary of Oregon Statutes and Administrative Rules that pertain to bicyclists and pedestrians.

A few useful rules for bicyclists and motor vehicles:

  • Bicyclists are allowed to use any roadway not specifically signed as closed to bicycles or other nonmotorized vehicles.

  • Bicyclists must use appropriate signals when preparing to turn or rapidly decelerate, except where doing so would prevent the safe operation of the bicycle.

  • Bicyclists operating in a shared lane of travel with motor-vehicle traffic are required to operate at the normal speed of traffic.

  • If unable to operate at the normal speed of traffic, bicyclists are required to ride as close as practicable to the right curb or edge of the roadway, except when:

    • Passing another vehicle

    • Preparing to execute a left turn

    • Avoiding hazardous road conditions

    • Riding in a bike lane

Bikes on TriMet
For longer trips, remember that all TriMet buses are bike accessible. For a list of bus routes and transit resources visit If You Want to Ride the Bus.
Remember that:

  • Only single-seat, two-wheeled, recumbent, and electric bikes the size of a standard bicycle are allowed on TriMet.

  • Trailers are not allowed.

  • Some bikes have wheels that are two tall, too wide, or too far apart to fit in TriMet's racks.

  • Tandems and bikes with internal combustion engines (using liquid fuel) are not allowed.

  • Children under the age of 12 with bicycles must be accompanied by an adult.

Tip: If you haven't used a bike on TriMet before and would like to practice putting your bike on the bus, you can do this while buses are laying over. Many of the buses serving Milwaukie lay over on 21st Avenue or Jackson Street (in downtown Milwaukie). Just tell the driver you'd like to practice putting your bike in the rack and give it a go.

Bike Lane Maintenance
Regular bike lane sweeping occurs every 8 days. If you know of a bike lane where present conditions create an immediate hazard for cyclists, please contact the Milwaukie Streets Division at 503-786-7617.
For street sweeping or maintenance issue on bike lanes and roads outside the city limits, call Clackamas County's Hazardous Road Condition line at 503-557-6391 during normal business hours. At all other times call the Clackamas County Sheriff at 503-655-8911.
